“Having spent the previous evening with Matilde, I had witnessed her excitement on discovering a box on the Lisburn rd so i offered to drive her there the following day and to make an adventure out of it with my kids- age 7 and 4.
This became a treasure hunt for ‘humming boxes’. We bribed the kids with promises of amazing sounds and opportunities to record with tiny mikes (maybe even some chocolate) if they kept their eyes open. We drove down Stranmillis road and passed lots of different types of boxes which prompted the discussion about how the shape of the electricity boxes that we were looking for is like a ‘brother and little sister’ shape, close together; one big, one small – not spread apart like cousins or big like grandad. Suddenly at the busy junction between stranmillis and malone roads we spied it, pulled into the lane beside it and off we ran to investigate my family’s first discovery of a real ‘live’ humming sound box. Exciting stuff!”
